About

Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School (LREI) is a coeducational, progressive independent day school serving Nursery through Grade 12 in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. Founded in 1921 by educator Elisabeth Irwin as an experimental public-school program and reorganized as an independent school in 1932, LREI is one of the oldest progressive schools in the United States. The curriculum emphasizes project-based learning, social justice, the arts, and intellectual inquiry over standardized testing, with no AP courses by design. The school occupies two Greenwich Village buildings — a Lower/Middle School on Bleecker Street and a High School on Charlton Street — and runs an extensive student-elected social action program. Alumni include public intellectuals, journalists, and artists, and graduates matriculate to a wide range of selective liberal-arts colleges and research universities.
